Jansz. Amsterdam: A Dinner I Still Remember

Some places stay with you long after you leave them. For me, Jansz. is one of those places.

It was our first evening in Amsterdam during our honeymoon. Early May, just after 7:00 PM. The city was beginning to slow down, the canals reflected the golden light of the setting sun, and the cool spring air made every step feel refreshing.

Our walk to the restaurant was an experience in itself.

We made our way through Amsterdam's narrow streets and picturesque canals, passing historic buildings, bicycles leaning against centuries-old bridges, and locals enjoying the final hours of daylight. Even today, I can still remember almost every corner of that walk. Sometimes the journey becomes just as memorable as the destination.

After researching restaurants before our trip, we decided to reserve a table at Jansz., located at Reestraat 8 in the heart of Amsterdam. It looked promising online, but nothing prepared us for what we experienced when we arrived.

The very first impression was unforgettable.

Before reaching the dining room, guests were welcomed into an elegant waiting area unlike anything I had seen before. Beautiful shelves filled with vintage laboratory bottles and glassware created the atmosphere of an old chemistry laboratory, while comfortable green seating invited guests to relax before dinner. It was sophisticated, distinctive, and immediately told us this restaurant paid attention to every detail.

That was the moment we looked at each other and quietly realized:

This place is going to be special.

From there, everything only became better.

The staff greeted us with genuine warmth that never felt rehearsed. Their hospitality was natural, professional, and welcoming, making us feel less like customers and more like invited guests.

The dining room itself was elegant without being intimidating. Soft lighting, beautiful interiors, and a calm atmosphere created the perfect setting for an unforgettable evening. Although the restaurant sat in the vibrant center of Amsterdam, inside it felt peaceful and intimate. A place where conversations flowed naturally and time seemed to slow down.

As dinner was served, the evening sky slowly transformed from warm golden tones into soft shades of blue. Watching the sunset reflect over the canals while enjoying dinner with my wife remains one of the clearest memories from our honeymoon. Every glance outside the window felt like another postcard coming to life.

Jansz.'s menu reflects modern Dutch cuisine with a strong emphasis on locally sourced ingredients and partnerships with producers such as Lindenhoff, Kaasfort, and Kesbeke, celebrating the craftsmanship of Dutch farmers and fishermen.

The menu offered a thoughtful selection of starters, seafood, premium meats, handmade pasta, and beautifully crafted desserts, with signature dishes including Yellowfin Tuna, Tenderloin, Halibut, Ricotta Ravioli, and the restaurant's own Jansz. Cheesecake.

Every dish was beautifully presented and prepared with precision. More importantly, the food delivered exactly what we had hoped for. Balanced flavors, quality ingredients, and the kind of cooking that allows each component to speak for itself. It wasn't simply a fine dining meal; it was an experience that matched the elegance of its surroundings.

Looking back today, I realize that what made Jansz. unforgettable wasn't only the excellent food or the beautiful setting.

It was the complete experience.

The peaceful walk through Amsterdam's canals. The unique entrance that immediately sparked our curiosity. The warm welcome from the staff. The quiet elegance of the dining room. The sunset outside the window. And the joy of sharing all of it with the person I love on the very first evening of our honeymoon.

Years later, I may not remember every dish we ordered. But I will always remember exactly how that evening made me feel.
